The televised funeral of Michael Jackson
Yup, I watched it on the TV yesterday. Over the past decades, we've forgotten about the "young" Michael Jackson, the musician and philanthropist. It was good to remember and celebrate that Michael Jackson, instead of the "old" Michael Jackson we know now.
I don't follow the 24x7 "news" coverage and I don't particularly care how or why he died, so perhaps I'm not as jaded as the average Joe. After the funeral, I was left with a feeling of sadness by the profound weight piled atop him by his fate and fame, and by thoughts of what could have been. Was he perfect? No, but nobody is. We merely have the benefit of being outside the spotlight.
Was/am I a Michael Jackson superfan? Not really. However, I grew up in the 80's, so he was a big part of the entertainment and music scene for my generation. I would consider his cultural influence to perhaps match Elvis, although Elvis died before I was born and times have changed so it's impossible to compare.
So, if you watch one thing relating to the death of Michael Jackson, I recommend the funeral. With good sound. And then... move on. There's nothing more to see here.
